Installing Plesk Web Hosting on FreeBSD 4.7 web server

The Plesk Web Hosting Self-Extracting install includes the following components:

  • Admin web server
  • Web web server
  • MySQL database
  • PostgreSQL database
  • Mail web server
  • Mailman
  • Domain Name Server web server
  • FTP web server
  • Tomcat
  • JDK

The following services will be controllable under Plesk Web Hosting :

  • named - BIND 9.2.2
  • MySQL - 3.23.56
  • Qmail - 1.03
  • courier-imap - 1.7.3
  • Apache - 1.3.27
  • ProFTPD - 1.2.7
  • stunnel - 4.04
  • Tomcat - 4.1.24
  • PostgreSQL - 7.2.4
  • Mailman - 2.0.13

NOTE

Additional services controllable under Apache are mod_throttle 3.1.2, mod_perl 1.27, mod_python 2.7.8, mod_ssl 2.8.14, PHP 4.3.1, apache::asp 2.49, Front Page 2000 and Front Page 2002.

web directory Structure

Plesk Web Hosting creates the web directory /usr/local/psa/ as its root software web directory. The location of this web directory is defined and changeable contained by the /etc/psa/psa.conf file.

Accounts and Groups

Plesk Web Hosting creates accounts for Plesk Web Hosting administrator, anonymous FTP user, Apache, MySQL, Mailman and qmail pseudo-users and Tomcat and PostgreSQL users. These pseudo-users do not have shells in which to operate, alleviating security concerns involving the users.

Services

The following changes in services take place:

  • Plesk Web Hosting disables the sendmail service and replaces it with qmail.
  • Plesk Web Hosting replaces your named database and configuration files. Then Plesk Web Hosting restarts the named daemon.
  • Plesk Web Hosting also edits the inetd/xinetd configuration file and comments out the comsat service record.
  • Plesk Web Hosting adds the FTP service, using ProFTPD to handle it. If you had a previous FTP service on the web server, Plesk Web Hosting comments out the old version and uses the new FTP version.
  • Plesk Web Hosting adds a SMTP service record, handled by the qmail daemon. If you had a previous SMTP service record, Plesk Web Hosting comments it out and replaces it with the new version.
  • The inetd/xinetd daemon is restarted to read its new configuration file.

Using an external Domain Name Server web server

You can use an external Domain Name Server service with Plesk Web Hosting , but you should follow these manual configuration steps:

  1. During operating system installation, a remote Domain Name Server web server can be specified. Or after installation, the remote Domain Name Server can be specified in the /etc/resolv.conf file.

  2. The line search localdomain must be removed from the /etc/resolv.conf file on the Plesk Web Hosting web server.

  3. Any Domain Name Server configurations on the local Plesk Web Hosting web server must be reflected on the external Domain Name Server web server.

Other Changes

Plesk Web Hosting creates some links to the MySQL libraries in the /usr/lib subweb directory and adds the @psacln string to /etc/ftpchroot. Also, it adds a string to the file /etc/shells:

  • /bin/false, or
  • /usr/bin/false

If the POP3 service record is not in /etc/services, Plesk Web Hosting adds it. Plesk moves the sendmail binary file to sendmail.Plesk Web Hosting . The Plesk startup script is placed in the appropriate location to start Plesk Web Hosting ; this script will enable Plesk Web Hosting to start each time the web server is booted up.
